NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday paid tribute to veteran socialist leader Dr Kumar Saptarshi, who passed away on July 18. Pawar hailed Saptarshi as a great leader who devoted his life to preserving the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.

Saptarshi was a prominent figure in Maharashtra's socio-political landscape for over five decades. He was the founder of the youth movement Yuvak Kranti Dal (Yukrand) and worked tirelessly to spread progressive thoughts among young people.

Addressing a condolence meeting at Bal Gandharv Rangmandir in Pune, Pawar said that Saptarshi dedicated his entire life to organizing young people and inspiring confidence in the younger generation. Pawar also said that Saptarshi believed in working for an ideology throughout one's life.

Saptarshi was born on August 21, 1941, and obtained his MBBS degree from BJ Medical College in Pune. He later pursued legal studies and dedicated his life to social work. He founded the Yuvak Kranti Dal in November 1967, which worked on issues concerning students, farmers, social justice, and democratic rights.

Saptarshi was also associated with socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan and entered electoral politics after joining the Janata Party in 1977. He was elected as a legislator from Maharashtra's Ahmednagar city in 1978.

Pawar recounted his interaction with Saptarshi and said that though he is no longer with us, his thoughts and work remain with us. Pawar urged everyone to preserve Saptarshi's legacy.
