A consumer protection commission in Chandigarh has directed Asics India to pay full compensation to a customer whose running shoes developed a critical defect just weeks after purchase. The order mandates a complete refund of Rs 6,499 along with additional penalties, setting a precedent for quality standards in the sports footwear industry.

The commission found the athletic shoe manufacturer responsible for both deficiency in service and engaging in unfair trade practices. Beyond the refund amount, Asics has been ordered to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to the complainant and must provide 6% annual interest on the refunded sum. The ruling came after the shoes' sole separated prematurely, rendering them unusable within just one month of the customer's purchase.

This judgment highlights growing consumer awareness regarding product quality and durability expectations. Sportswear manufacturers are increasingly facing scrutiny over the longevity of their products, particularly premium-priced items designed for athletic performance. The case underscores that consumers expect shoes marketed as running footwear to withstand normal usage for a reasonable period.
