Visa Consultancy Ordered to Refund Rs 12.35 Lakh for Fake Canada Study Documents
Consumer court penalizes visa consultancy for submitting forged admission letters to defraud student applicant.
A consumer protection commission in Chandigarh has ordered a visa consultancy firm and one of its former employees to return Rs 12.35 lakh to a 21-year-old woman who fell victim to an education fraud scheme. The case highlights the growing menace of fake document rackets targeting aspiring overseas students seeking admission to Canadian colleges.
The consultancy submitted fraudulent admission documents on behalf of the complainant to secure a study visa for Canada. The consumer commission found both the company and the individual employee culpable of delivering deficient services and engaging in unfair business practices. Beyond the full monetary refund, the tribunal also imposed compensation for the mental harassment and distress caused to the victim throughout the legal proceedings.
This case underscores the vulnerability of young students pursuing higher education abroad. Many rely on consultancies to navigate complex visa and admission processes, making them susceptible to exploitation by unscrupulous operators who prioritize profit over authenticity. The use of forged educational credentials not only violates immigration laws but also jeopardizes the student's future opportunities in international education systems.
Such incidents have become increasingly common across India, particularly in states with high outbound migration for studies. Students and parents are often unable to verify document authenticity before submission, leaving them at the mercy of fraudulent agents. The commission's strict order sends a strong signal to the consultancy industry that regulatory bodies will not tolerate deceptive practices.
Experts advise aspirants to independently verify their consultancy's credentials and directly contact educational institutions before committing funds. This ruling reinforces the importance of consumer awareness and encourages stricter oversight of visa and education consultancy services operating across the country.
