Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train first phase to launch in 2027; 80% complete
The Surat-to-Bilimora section of India's bullet train project is nearly finished and will open within three years, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced. The ambitious corridor aims to revolutionize travel between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
India's high-speed rail ambition moved closer to reality as Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the first operational section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train will be inaugurated in 2027. The initial phase will run between Surat and Bilimora, with construction now 80% complete, marking a major step forward for the country's pioneering bullet train project.
Ministetvaishnaw, who heads India's railway portfolio, detailed the progress during a public address on the milestone. The Surat-to-Bilimora segment is the leading section of the larger Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, which aims to slash travel time between the two major commercial hubs. The bullet train will eventually connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad, reducing the journey to approximately two hours compared to the current eight-hour journey by road.
Construction challenges and complex engineering work have stretched the project timeline significantly since its original conception. The corridor required extensive underground tunnelling, bridge construction, land acquisition across multiple states, and coordination between Japanese and Indian agencies. Vaishnaw's announcement indicates that despite these obstacles, the project has maintained steady momentum toward completion. The minister also revealed plans for substantial infrastructure upgrades in Ahmedabad itself, including new underpasses and comprehensive station redevelopment to prepare the city for this modern transportation system.
The opening of the Surat-Bilimora section will demonstrate the viability of bullet train technology in India and potentially pave the way for faster completion of the remaining phases. The full Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is expected to transform transportation patterns across the western states, benefiting business commuters, tourists, and residents of major cities along the route.
Vaishnaw's announcement also included news of India's third semiconductor manufacturing plant inauguration, highlighting the government's broader infrastructure push. Railway officials are now focusing on finalizing technical certifications and safety protocols for the 2027 launch, with work proceeding on schedule across all sections of the project.
